Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service held to pray over the new administration.
Members of the administration, including President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, gathered together at the Washington National Cathedral to seek the will of God through prayer. This service is the 59th of its kind and is held at the start of each president’s term. This long-standing tradition dates back to the first inauguration of President George Washington and acknowledges the importance of prayer as the foundation of each administration
Members of several faiths and denominations were included among those seeking God’s blessing over the next four years.
Due to the ongoing restrictions in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the president joined the gathering virtually with Vice President Harris, the first lady, and the second gentlemen. During the service’s homily, Rev. William Barber II prayed a passage of Scripture from Isaiah 58, asking God to “loose the bands of wickedness, [and] let the oppressed go free.”
The Very Rev. Randolph Marshall Hollerith, dean of Washington National Cathedral said of the event, “This cathedral is a house of prayer for all people and a sacred space where America gathers in moments of deep significance, and we are honored to welcome the nation to pause, give thanks and seek God’s help in the hard work ahead.”
